Glasgow City-20121021-00526

About a month from now, I will be celebrating my 1-year anniversary with Glasgow. Ballz celebrates this momentous occasion by sharing various, unrelated videographic evidence that I’ve been here and not secretly hiding in my parents’ basement. Here are some random videos taken from cellphones that may or may not be representative of my time here so far. Enjoy…or not. You are free and in control of your own destiny. Continue reading

Children play on the Berlin Wall

I was recently working in Berlin, traveling around the city teaching English at preschools. There was one particular kindergarten where they used to keep photo montages of recent events in the hallway. They had pirate-themed parties, sleepovers, outings to the park. It was all very cute. What Are You Doing Here?

A question many Scots, in fact, all the Scots, have asked me in complete and utter bewilderment is “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?” Continue reading

Los Angeles is the new Berlin, everybody knows. Berlin is so weird, everybody knows. “I’m an artist, and I’m sensitive about my shit.” You’re too late. This piece will probably be featured in Lonely Planet 2017, when Berlin will just be a wasteland inhabited by one guy dancing by himself to Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart” and moaning about how it once was.

Ah, Montreal.

Where Peter Pans rufio themselves at the age of 43, ride the steed of the Cheval Blanc into the night and wake up next to a disheveled Bonhomme who tearfully complains that he has genitally injured himself on the mechanical bull at Chez Serge  so badly that he will be the last of his depleted race (He is both gladdened yet saddened when they explain to him that he “has nothing down there anyway”). It Works Wonders For The Poor: (2 in 1 package : struggling artist diary entries + semi-enjoyment guidelines for the city of effin’ Berlin)

Lift these crusty eyelids, it’s 3 p.m. Sniff your nails, that’s yesterday night’s Döner-scent. It’s about time to stumble out onto the sun-baked sidewalk and hop on your excuse for a bike. Yes, then storm through the city like a bad-ass that everybody must be looking at in awe, but inevitably invisible in the urban chaos. Oh, how i wish they knew I was currently headbanging to Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna. Continue reading

10 best city, town, village or community names in Ontario

This list has very little to do with 2012 in particular, but that’s beside the point. Ever since I made the drive from Toronto to the Michigan border, amusing myself with increasingly absurd names of Ontario towns, I’ve been waiting for an excuse to share some of them.

Included are fun facts about all 10 places.

Hot Toddy Time Travel Pt 2: The past, present and future of singer/songwriter Celine Brooks

Sometimes, to cure a friend/flatmate’s illness, you suggest a night of hot toddies and use this opportunity to drink whiskey diluted with lemon and honey until 4 AM and listen to U2 while interviewing her about her past and future lives. This is a new Ballz segment, why not. Probable anachronisms. Continue reading
