1918
by Onu Oremun
~ as inspired by the song “Chimes of Freedom” by Bob Dylan and cover by the Bad Omens (1966)
Forever flashing for freedom…
A thousand winding steps to take
While the storm doth stir and quake
A thousand bricks of stone to break
A thousand miles the sound must make
From high in my keep, safe, I watch
Surrounded by four walls, safe, I watch
To ring the bell of freedom –
But naked truth is lost behind
Many twists and thorns
Cries and scorns
Of tolling monumental strife
We are merely player’s in the henchman’s game of life
A thousand winding steps I took
While the forever storm struck and shook
A thousand brick of stone amok
But ne’er the freedom bell forsook
From beneath the rubble, safe, I whisper
Surrounded by four walls, safe, I whisper
To ring the bell of freedom –
Tomorrow’s poets talk of today
Of the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
An’ when what is learned is burned or churned,
All gaze upon the chimes of freedom flashing
The drawbridge closed tight and secured
But human hearts are rarely cured
An’ this infinite mighty word –
A thousand winding steps I took
While the forever storm struck and shook
A thousand brick of stone amok
But ne’er the freedom bell forsook
From the shadows hidden, safe, I stir
Surrounded by four walls, safe, I stir
To ring the bell of freedom –
