The Mass Critical

By Katie Heffring

The mass. The government. The police.

The mules. The mass critical.

It always starts with, why are you protesting?

Spoiled, angry, never happy.

Everything is ok.

Tabarnak, câlice, ennuyeux!

The government laughs.

Takes your hands and puts them behind your back with plastic ties.

Uses their goons to put you in the corner.

Spoiled, angry, never happy, violent!

And you’re stupid, right?

You haven’t made millions, so you’re stupid or in a daze.

Easily manipulated.

Easily induced with fear.

Yeah, the police have one tactic in a protest – to manufacture fear.

They crank it out with their horses, bicycles, motorcycles, helicopters.

They crank it out with their batons, rubber bullets, pepper spray, grenades.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

And you’re afraid, right?

No, man, repressed.

Mixed with Western levels of tolerance.

Depression, repression, repression.

YET I SEEK TRUTH WITH PEACE.

We are immobilized because:

We have a reason and a goal.

We have passion and determination.

We have persistence and hope.

We can stifle fear and take risks.

We see the past, the present and the future.

And yeah, these are all the traits of a successful entrepreneur.

A successful capitalist.

LULZ.

LOOK, MAN, WE ARE GROWING.

And look at you standing there alone.

LOOK AT ME, MAN, SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE.

And look at you surrounded by things.

LOOK AT US USE ALL THOSE FUCKING SKILLS!

Those skills you primed us for feeding the system.

Whose laughing now?

Look at us use all those fucking skills!

Not to spurn out money.

Not to sell products and land.

Not to buy off our brother or sister.

Not to change the bloody market.

BUT TO CHANGE THE WORLD, TABARNAK.
